Turismo de Portugal honours 486 companies committed to sustainable practices

Turismo de Portugal honoured a record number of companies committed to sustainable practices on Wednesday. A total of 486 companies were honoured – 100 with the ‘ESG Engaged’ label and 386 with the ‘ESG Committed’ label.

Turismo de Portugal has recognised a record 486 tourism companies for their commitment to sustainability practices. Of the total number of tourism companies honoured, 100 received the ‘ESG Engaged’ seal, the maximum number of companies to reach this level of distinction in the Tourism 360o Companies Programme. Recognised with the ‘ESG Committed’ label were the remaining 386 tourism companies that joined the sustainability journey through this Programme.

According to Turismo de Portugal, the distinction of the 100 companies with the ‘ESG Engaged’ label reflects their commitment to environmentally responsible practices, through the implementation of concrete and measurable measures, which were reported using the Organisational Tool for Reporting Sustainability in Tourism (FOREST).

The 386 companies recognised with the ‘ESG Committed’ label demonstrate their aspiration to be at the forefront of the transformation of Portuguese tourism, proving that a sustainable and regenerative future is not only possible, but also economically viable, says TP.

The awards ceremony took place at the Montebelo Mosteiro de Alcobaça Historic Hotel and was attended by the Secretary of State for Tourism, Pedro Machado, and the president of Turismo de Portugal, Carlos Abade.

On this occasion, the president of Turismo de Portugal, Carlos Abade, emphasised that ‘sustainability is no longer an option, neither in tourism nor in any other sector of activity. It is a condition for success and growth. Hence our commitment to the Tourism 360º Companies Programme to support companies in our sector to make this journey as early and as well as possible. Today we celebrate these 486 companies and the aim is to bring everyone together on this journey.’

With the aim of positioning Portugal as one of the most competitive and sustainable tourist destinations in the world, the Tourism 360º Companies Programme aims to promote responsible practices in the environmental, social and governance pillars, ensuring that companies have better access to funding, optimised efficiency and a more sustainable financial performance.

Turismo de Portugal also points out that on Tuesday, September 24, this programme was awarded an honourable mention by the European Commission as part of the European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA), an initiative that distinguishes good business promotion practices based on their contribution to the economic development and employment of regions.
